The following information is taken from the math department newsletter.
In 1898, the math department at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) has awarded the first Ph.D. to Albert Candy.
The above Ph.D. was the third Ph.D. awarded by the University of Nebraska, and the second Ph.D. awarded by an insitution to the west of the Mississippi.
Up to December 31, 1998 (i.e., in about 100 years), the math department at UNL has awarded 156 Ph.D. degrees, and more than 2500 bachelors and masters degrees.
In the last 6 years, the math department was nominated for the University-wide Departmental Teaching Award (this is usually given to one department of all the University of Nebraska branches (UNL, UNK, UNMC, UNO)) several times and it won this award once.
Also, in 1998, the math department at UNL was awarded The Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring.
